  The next in my list of single lessons I am releasing is the “Lilacs and Silk” demonstration. This is a good painting demonstration because I use this beautiful rich violet color against the reddish abstract background which makes the color stand and at the same time creates a harmonious warm feeling… it’s a great lesson in subtleties. This painting looks complex but is a surprisingly easy painting to learn from. 

   Painting Tip:    This may seems like kind of a weird tip but it really does work. When you paint blossoms or flowers or any grouping of something (greenery especially) start by painting the leaves, flowers, blossoms, that you can’t see. The ones that are covered by the blossoms, etc. in the fore front (the area covering what you are going to paint).  What this does is create depth in your painting because you will never cover all of those further back blossoms completely or leaves Etc. So this will give your painting more of a sense of depth and layering because you’ll pick up little nuances of the stuff in the background peeking through… and don’t forget to twigs in the branches. This is a big tip because so often when people paint flowers or Blossom, etc. it looks almost like a thin layer on top of the painting rather than any feeling of depth. Another tip on this when you paint that further back stuff add a little bit of background color to it and then it will be relegated to the background due to the similarity in colors.
